Elephant Beach: A Slice of Tropical Paradise in the Andaman Islands

Located on Havelock Island, Elephant Beach presents a dream destination for any beach lover and thrill-seeking water sports enthusiast in the Andamans and Nicobar Islands. It forms part of the most sought-after beaches in the Andaman Archipelago owing to its crystal-like beauty with variance in marine life. The name of the beach itself is a throwback to times when there were elephants roaming its shores; none can be seen today, though. Today, it is a wholesome mix of blue waters and white shores with a number of water sports thrown in.

Culture and Heritage

The beach is, in fact, named “Elephant Beach” because it was associated with a part of history that dealt with elephants. The place used to be known for a high volume of elephants and an elephant training camp nearby.

Things to Explore

Elephant Beach has plenty of options to suit each kind of visitor:

Snorkeling

The beach is famous for its rich coral reefs, which start just a meter or two beneath the water's surface. Bright corals and schools of different coloured fish make snorkelling in these waters a visual feast. Equipment and guides are available on-site.

Sea Walk

The second option is sea walking, which is absolutely unique. It involves walking at the bottom of the sea using special helmets that enable the person to breathe underwater. This activity gives one an immediate view of life in the sea without necessarily having to swim in the water.

Glass-bottom boat Ride

This is very suitable for people who do not want to get wet. Take this ride, which will help you gaze at the underwater world while sitting in a glass-bottom boat. It is a great way to have a look at the marine biodiversity while staying dry.

Jet Skiing and Parasailing

The most adventurous ones can go for jet skiing and parasailing on Elephant Beach. It gives a thrilling experience while riding on waves due to jet skiing and provides a bird's eye view of the beautiful coastline in parasailing.

Banana Boat Rides

This is an enjoyable, family-oriented water sport in which an inflated, banana-shaped boat is towed by a speedboat. It is quite an exciting way to enjoy the sea and waves.

Beach Relaxation

If you are looking forward to a more laid-back experience, the beach is ideal for sunbathing, swimming in shallow waters, or having a picnic. Small shacks serving snacks and refreshments make it easy to spend a laid-back day by the sea.

How to Reach

Elephant Beach can be reached in two major ways

Most people take a boat from the Havelock Island jetty. It usually takes 20 to 30 minutes of a boat ride with breathtaking views along the coastline. Since demand is high, it is highly recommended to book your boat tickets in advance as most permits and boat slots are pre-booked.

The trek route starting near Radhanagar Beach is meant for the adventurous. This route through lush forest is about 2 km long and enables one to explore the island’s natural beauty from close. However, the trek route could be quite exhausting and may not be ideal for young children and elderly visitors. Also, the return journey must be made by the same means, whether by boat or by trekking.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Elephant Beach is from September to May. However, between June and August, there could be a shutdown of the beach owing to heavy monsoon rain to allow for environmental recovery. If your visit coincides with such closure, other beaches like Lighthouse Beach offer similar experiences. Always check current travel advisories and availability before planning your visit.
