Kalapathar Beach: The Secret Beauty of the Andamans

Located in a quiet Kalapathar Village in Swaraj Dweep, Kalapathar Beach is a nature lover's and solitude seeker's haven. Silky golden sands guard the azure waters, fringed with lush greenery-the ultimate beach environs that will take you far away from jostling tourist spots and into the lap of peaceful solitude.

Culture and Heritage

It goes by the name Kalapathar because of some black rocks along the coast, which give the beach a unique touch regarding its natural beauty. The area close to the beach has lots of trees that were uprooted by the great tsunami in 2004; now, they simply lie scattered on the shore, making a strong contrast to the spotless sand. Because the beach is at a distance from the main town, it happens to be all the more appealing for quieter retreats away from the crowds.

Things to Do

Kalapathar Beach is a place of serenity where one can sit and spend time with nature. The black rocks of the beach juxtaposed with the turquoise waters present an erratic break in the landscape, perfect for strolls and soul-relaxing walks. Carry your hammock along and hang it between the trees to feel the relaxing sound of waves and the soothing sea breeze.

Although swimming is not allowed because of the sharp rocks, this is well compensated by the beauty of the beach. This is a very good place for photography-the rocks displace the ruggedness, and the sea is calm. If you want something different, then try going to the beach during sunrise. The sky would be painted with shades of gold and pink, reflected in the still waters.

How to Reach

Kalapathar Beach is quite easy to get to from Havelock Island. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes by car from the harbour and the marketplace in Havelock. You can use a taxi or a scooter on rent to get there. Pretty scenic is the road that leads to this place, with the sea on one side and forests on the other.

Best Time to Visit

Kalapathar Beach's sunrises are spectacular, so it is highly recommended to reach the place before 5 a.m. if one can make it early in the morning. For late risers, the beach is open during the whole day and is an ideal place to spend a few hours between hotel check-out and boarding a ferry.

Delicacies one must have-

Although no major eating places are found on the beach itself, local stalls offer a range of tasty refreshments. Fresh coconut water and fruit salads must be tried from these stalls. Bhel and chaat are authentic street food local delicacies, and if you do not try them in the state of Goa, they are especially found in this area. You will be missing out on an absolute treat.

Preserve the Beauty

Being a part of the Andaman Islands, Kalapathar Beach is also very tidy. Littering is not encouraged as people come here to experience pristine beauty. Deposit the waste in dustbins and keep the inherent beauty of the beach so that it remains the same for the coming visitors, too.
